We’ll also be showcasing at the Caffe Lena showcase in Room 1411 on Friday night at 1:40 am (so it’s really Saturday!)

Thursday Nov 13 – Room 1525
11:30 – Max Cohen – Original songs and gorgeous guitar pieces. “Max is one of those rare guitarists able to create an atmosphere that supports and cradles the voice with both tenderness and strength.” Priscilla Herdman. Max is our guitarist, but he’s also a wonderful singer and songwriter. We’re happy to present him here.
11:45 – Mist Covered Mountains – Celtic & contemporary folk. “Snuck up on me – a delightful CD from left field!” DJ Rich Warren, WFMT Chicago’s “Midnight Special” Molly Hebert-Wilson, Max Cohen and Donna Hébert present trad and original songs in harmony, sung in English and Irish, accompanied by virtuoso fiddling and guitar. Donna showcased last year here with fiddle quartet Panache and all three Mist Covered Mountain band members are part of the Great Groove Band teaching posse at Old Songs and Philly Folk Festivals.
12:00 – Hannah Shira Naiman – “Songs not from the mountains, but from a rocky, rugged place.” From Toronto, Hannah Shira Naiman sings original Appalachian roots music- Her banjo-driven songs (backed by her neo-traditional stringband) draw on folk traditions and themes, and “are a little bit crooked, a little bit new.”
12:15 – Camela Widad – A little bit saintly ~ A little bit rock-n-roll. Camela Widad is a folk acoustic troubadour; part poetess, part mystic, with a voice like honey and fire. Her songwriting delves straight to the core: full of beauty, heartbreak, truth and timeless wisdom.

1:15 – The Doll Sisters – The Doll Sisters are a fiery Celtic Americana duo who were nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award in 2013. On guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin & bodhran, Jenna Leigh and Shelby are fierce!
1:30 – Christine deLeon – Songs that make you think, sigh, laugh and say “Yeah, I know what that’s like!” A compelling collection of catchy melodies carried by a crystal-clear and nimble voice.
1:45 – Lyal Strickland – Full of rural grit and grace, Ozarks native Lyal Strickland balances songwriting, touring and raising grass-fed beef. With songs that come straight from the heart with a heavy dose of reality, Lyal examines economic downturns and upturns and the intricacies of small town culture.

Friday Nov. 14
11:45 – Kaia Kater – Art Menius calls her “the Ola Belle Reed of the 21st century,” and Riley Baugus dubs her “a wonderful musician with abilities beyond her years.” An eclectic traditionalist, she’s of the youngest performers in the old-time and folk communities, this 20 year-old plays the banjo, sings and has her own unique take on Appalachian and Canadian traditional music.
12:00 – Cassie & Maggie MacDonald – These Nova Scotia lasses encompass everything you could ask for in a musical act – fiddling, step-dancing, piano and guitar, as well as vocals! Their talent is only surpassed by the joy with which they so generously share it. Sisters, cohorts and collaborators, Cassie and Maggie have been enchanting audiences far and wide with their infectious energy, driving rhythms and lilting melodies.
12:15 – The Cupcakes – Start with 3 uber talented women; add 5-6 instruments, (3 at a time); then cream together with a bouquet of awards for songwriting and independent music. Stir in 6 CDs, sprinkle with jingles, tours with famous people, production credits, and videos. Ice the whole thing with humor and harmony. No need to bake- The Cupcakes definitely do the cooking!
12:30 – Claudia Schmidt – Claudia is our SPECIAL guest at NERFA! More than 4 decades as a touring professional have found the Michigan native traversing North America as well as Europe, in venues ranging from intimate clubs to 4,000 seat theatres, and festival audiences of 25,000 listeners. She has recorded nineteen albums of mostly original songs, exploring folk, blues, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing.

But seriously, when he sings about life in the country, he isn’t just making it up, he’s living it!

2:15 – Durham County Poets – The Durham County Poets are five guys from the Chateauguay Valley of Québec, who have played in blues gospel, Cajun, folk and rock groups. It’s a mix of sounds and stories, influences and genres that are uniquely their own.
